E-Book
A little bit about e-books!
Printed books are here to stay. At least that’s what it looks like as people continue to enjoy reading of paper pages. That is not to say that e-books are not important. They are! We like to say that an e-book is not a replacement to the printed book, but instead is an add-on to it. By having both a printed book and e-book you give the reader two chances to read your work. A great thing about an e-book is that you can sell an infinite amount books and never have to reprint.
E-books should be read on a dedicated e-reading device.
If you use an app on a device or computer, that could adversely affect what you see. Fonts could be distorted..
Re-flowable:
Standard reflowable e-books (text can be enlarged or reduced and the text will shift) can be viewed with any dedicated ereading device. They can also be opened on a PC using an e-book app like Adobe Digital Editions or Calibre. Macs and other IOS devices have a native e-book app called IBooks which will automatically open e-books.
This type of ebook is usually made for books that are primarily fiction with text. If there are photos, that's ok. With this type of ebook, the reader can change the font size for better readability. but headers, footers and page numbers do not exist. Page numbers do not exist because changing the font size makes the text "Reflow" to another page.
Fixed Layout
Fixed Layout e-books (text looks exactly like the printed book) are best read on a tablet like an Ipad or a PC with a decent size screen. Again, Macs and IOS devices will automatically open these e-books using the IBooks app. Smaller devices can open these e-books but the page will shrink to fit the display of the device being used making some of the smaller text difficult to read.
This type of ebook retains the exact look of the printed book. It is mainly for books with lots of formatting, graphics and images. In this case, font sizes can't be changed. Any page will be sized to fit the display of the device being used to view the ebook. Consequently, small text may need to be pinch zoomed.

With fixed layout eBooks you can also add enrichments such as audio and video. With a tap of an icon your children's book can be set to read page by page. Or maybe you want to add video to your cookbook. Each of these features is available with fixed layout from your supplied files**

Things to know about e-books
The first thing to realize about e-books is the fact that they haven’t been around long. Unlike page layout programs that have been around since the start of “Desktop Publishing”, e-books are in their infancy and although there have been a lot of improvements, they don’t have nearly the capability of formatting different things like a robust page layout program like InDesign has.
For one thing, e-books cannot convert graphics. Before any graphic can be used in an e-book it must be converted to an image, usually a jpeg. This limits the clarity of the graphic since a jpeg is comprised of different colored pixels which has a tendency of making the graphic blurry. This is especially noticeable if the graphic is small.
Columns are another thing. At this juncture, an e-book can only have one column.
E-books do have their advantages however. With an e-book there is no need for having reprints. Also, color images can be placed anywhere in an e-book whereas in a printed book it has to be placed on certain pages. Links will be live in an e-book and these days you can actually add sound and video to an e-book.
When it comes to publishing an e-book on your own, there are a few things you need to be aware of. When publishing to Amazon you need only need an Amazon account. You can go to Amazon’s publishing page at kdp.amazon.com and instructions can walk you through the process which is fairly easy.
Amazon uses its own unique cataloguing system so unlike other sites, it is not necessary to have an ISBN for Amazon however many people often will include one for the e-book version regardless.
To publish on Apple Ibooks, however, you will need a Mac. If you wish to publish on Ibooks and don’t have a Mac. We can upload your e-book for a small fee. Mind you, it will require you divulge your credit card info but we do not keep any of that info.
There are two types of e-books. The standard version where the fonts can be enlarged or reduced by the person reading and the “fixed Layout” version which retains the exact look of the printed piece. With the standard version, enlarging the fonts will cause the text to “reflow” to a different position on the page or even to another page.
Now there are advantages and disadvantages of each type. The standard “reflowable” version does not have any page numbers and headers and footers are not carried over. . With the “fixed layout” e-book every page must fit the display of whatever device is being used to view the e-book. This obviously will reduce the size of the fonts when viewed on a small device like a smartphone especially where smaller font sizes are concerned but you can pinch zoom to magnify text if need be.
Viewing an e-book can also be a matter for concern. Ideally an e-book should be viewed on a dedicated ereader. In many cases, however, this is not the case. Apps are often used to emulate an ereader which is ok but be aware, this can affect the “look” of the e-book. Even a dedicated e-reader can have issues. Every e-reading device uses proprietary software to interpret the underlying HTML code in an e-book. What this means is that each device will not interpret the coding the same way or risk copyright infringement on another device so your e-book will look different on different devices.
